In Tuscany, following a road can become an exercise in attention.
From a distance, a hill looks like a simple shape. Move closer and a row of trees appears, then a pale road and the edge of a field. A landscape can be read from different distances: first as a whole, then as a fabric of small gestures.
Light constantly shifts the emphasis. A house that almost disappears in the morning can become the centre of the scene in late afternoon. Staying in the same place for a few minutes is a way of travelling, too. There is no need to add another stop; sometimes the place you are in simply deserves more time.
“Paesaggio” — landscape — is the word to take with you. It invites you to notice relationships: between a road and a hill, between a building and its horizon. Try describing the scene in three Italian words. Start with luce, strada, silenzio: light, road, silence.
